Post Office cuts the cost of travel insurance
The Post Office travel insurance has announced summer special discounts on its range of policies.
Premiums for annual travel multi-trip policies will be cut by £10 per person and single trip policies for six days or more will be reduced by £5 per person from 2nd July until 31st August 2007. The discounts, which are available on European and Worldwide travel, are intended to encourage more travelers to take out adequate cover for their holiday this summer. Figures released by the Post Office show that nearly half (47%) of holidaymakers are still not taking out any travel insurance cover when they go abroad. When questioned about the reasons for not buying travel cover, 46% said it was a waste of money and didn't think they'd need it. One in eight people (14%) said they simply forgot to buy it and a further 12% said the cost put them off. Of those surveyed, holidaymakers in London are the biggest risk takers with 55% saying they had been away without cover at least once. Travellers from Scotland, the Midlands and Wales and the rest of the South are slightly more cautious (48, 45 and 46% respectively had not taken out insurance). Holidaymakers from the North are the most prudent with 57% saying they have never travelled without buying a travel insurance policy first. Head of Post Office travel Kevin McAdam said: "The amount of people who have admitted to going on holiday without travel insurance is extremely alarming. Our figures confirm that insurance is all too often forgotten in the excitement of planning a holiday, or even worse, it's considered by some to be non-essential. "But something as commonplace as a lost bag or visit to a doctor abroad could see a person shelling out hundreds of pounds if they aren't covered. Why take the risk?" Travellers buying Post Office travel insurance online will also benefit from the new summer discounts, as well as receiving a further 10% discount through the Post Office website. Need for terrorism cover on travel insurance policies highlighted by Insure and Go
Insure and Go travel insurance is calling for wider terrorism cover as standard on travel policies following the release of terrorism data by the US Government.
The figures released by the US National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC) show that the number of terrorist incidents around the world has increased by 6,249% since 2003 and of the 40,000 people killed or injured by terrorist incidents in 2005, 14,500 (36%) were civilians. But despite the increased risk of terrorist incidents, most UK travel insurance policies contain exclusions for terrorist attacks preventing claims for loss or injury arising from terrorism. Insure and Go travel insurance is calling on all UK insurers to follow its example and remove terrorism exclusions to ensure all customers are protected. Insure and Go?s travel policies provide medical expenses cover for those caught up in terrorist attacks, plus emergency assistance and cover for the cost of personal possessions and some cancellations. This cover applies to all those directly affected by an act of terrorism when travelling to or having a holiday in countries confirmed as safe by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. Director of Insure and Go, Perry Wilson, commented... "These figures show that terrorism is an unfortunate reality of the modern world and insurers have a responsibility to their customers to offer a suitable range of cover to reflect this risk. Considering that tourists are becoming much more adventurous in their holiday choices, increasingly travelling to areas like the Middle East, South-East Asia and South America, where terrorism is a much more common occurrence, it?s outrageous that terrorism exclusions on travel insurance policies have not been removed already." Whilst many of the terrorist attacks counted in the NCTC data occurred in terror hotspots such as Iraq, 2005 was the year that terrorist incidents arrived in the UK, as well as popular tourist destinations including Spain, Bali, Jordan, Egypt, Colombia, Philippines and Nepal. Those travelling abroad without insurance and caught up in an terrorist incident could be fully liable for expensive medical bills. According to the Association of British Insurers, about half of travel insurance policies cover medical expenses caused by a terrorist incident and some go further to include other related expenses.
