An insurer has launched a specialist policy to cover tablet computers such as the iPad.
The policy, available from O2, can be bought by any tablet user, regardless of whether they are an O2 customer or even whether they have a data plan. At the moment it covers the Apple iPad range and the Samsung Galaxy Tab, with more models to be added later.
There are two options: a £10 a month deal covering theft and damage, and a £15 a month deal that also covers lost tablets. The policy is only valid if taken out within 90 days of buying the device.
Such deals may not be a good buy for all users. Most people will be covered against theft from the home under contents policies, and many such policies also offer some cover for items outside the home. However, some home contents policies may have individual limits on the value of covered items, which may be exceeded by a tablet. The O2 policy does have a £50 excess for each claim.
Arguably the biggest advantage of this specialist insurance is that O2 will normally supply a replacement device the next day (or upon the customer's return to the UK if they lose or damage the device abroad.) In contrast household policies may take several weeks or even months to pay out.
