Has the previous person tried getting thatch insurance anywhere else, because I think he will find that the NFU Mutual are not the only ones that would apply this requirement. Also the other previous person who was surprised that NFU don't cover built up areas - I would have thought it was obvious from the website and also the name National Farmers Union Mutual insurers is a bit of a give away.

I contacted NFU Mutual after seeing that they were highly recommended by Which? magazine. I asked quotes for car insurance + building and contents insurance. To my surprise, I was passed from pillar to post by 2 of their local branches plus 2 phone calls to their 'Direct' customer desk. No one seemed to be interested in providing me with quotes.
Eventually, one of the staff admitted that , "We don't really cover built up areas like Manchester, Glasgow, Liverpool and London."
If that's the case, why do MFU Mutual not say so on their website? It's just a pity that the staff I spoke to didn't have the decency to tell me when I initially contacted them.

Don't except a free fire risk surveyor to inspect your property as it can cost you £1000 to keep them happy. The 1 of 7 "recommendations" is for my electrical wiring in my thatched property to be encased in steel or plastic conduit. My electrician who sees many old thatches said the wiring is in perfect condition and no fire hazard. I will need to rewire the whole house to keep NFU happy.
