Customer Review Comments:
Very helpful staff on the telephone; good at dealing with my having to add some medical conditions for the second year of my insurance with them and did not impose any additional premium.

They also cover a fairly long list of sports risks as standard and have a sliding scale of risk intensity that demands higher premiums.

And that's where I think they are inflexible.

Why?

Well.. Sailing or crewing a leisure yacht in costal waters (defined by Explorer as anywhere within 12 nautical miles of land) is included in the basic list of risks they cover at no extra premium. So far so good.

BUT, when I asked them what the increased premium would be if I wanted to travel on a sailing yacht outside the 12 mile limit (say for example travelling across to France across the wider part of the Channel, not just Dover-Calais) they wanted SIX times the basic premium! This is because they classify sailing *anywhere* outside the 12 mile limit as being as risky as "Alligator Wrestling", amongst other pursuits. Portsmouth to Normandy is hardly the North Atlantic.

And what's worse is that they said I could not take out a separate insurance with another company just to cover me for "offshore" sailing, as then I'd have two policies and they don't like that.

Good Points: Call Centre staff, medical conditions cover clear and flexible
Bad Points: Strange and not so flexible risk assessments, as described above.
