Took out car insurance with Budget 2006-07. I wrote and told them I did not want an automatically renewal nor did I authorise them to debit my account again. I reserved the right of choice. Budget deny having received any letters or any recorded conversation with me.
A year later Budget took it upon themselves to renew an insurance I had already written to them to say I did not want to renew with them and as they were unable to debit my account, as it had changed, they have referred me to Debit collecting agency. Whilst supposedly still following their complaints procedure, they have failed to respond to my complaint within the four weeks as specified by their policy.
My advice to anyone is don't deal with budget and if you do record everything, send letters by recorded delivery.
I have spoken to the FSA and the EU consumer rights unit both indicated I do have the right of choice and that Budget's practice is at best sharp practice.
