ROYAL BANK OF SCOTLAND are the same. I was away on a kilimanjaro climb and because I did not contact them within 48 hours they wouldn't pay me for my lost iphone 4. Rubbish policy not worth the paper its written on or the tel call to them.

I had the same reason for rejection, but I lost mine on the 1st of January. They didn't reopen until 3rd. So I reported it to Orange and then to Lifestyle Services as soon as they were open. This is the worst experience I've had with any company ever! It is nearly into the 4th month of them processing my claim. I have complained to Barclays, I told them I will be looking else where as soon as this problem is resolved.

I also had my claim for a stolen iphone denied by Barclays Lifestyle Services Group. Their reason? I did not report it to them within 48 hours of it being lost/stolen. I did report it to my network provider and police within 24 hrs though, I suspect LSG operate 'claim denial' policies as they seem determined not to pay out.
