As a subcontractor for Homeserve I can shed some light on why they are so poor.
They only pay the subcontractor a set rate of £48.00 plus VAT. This includes parts, labour and travel. So if you live 1 hour away from the engineer he will possibly spend 3-4 hours in total on this job maybe using parts of £10.00 and fuel £8.00 - £10.00 there and back could be £20.00.
So we are sometimes looking at approx £18.00 labour, if you divide this by 3 then its £6.00 an hour for a skilled tradesman. This £48.00 is paid even on Christmas day. So how is a tradesman supposed to feel motivated to do a super job. FACT THEIR NOT!
A tradesman will turn up, perform a quick remedy and leave inorder to try and desperately make a profit. Homeserve also have their favourate contractors, these contractors will cherry pick the jobs and then the smaller companies will be left with the nightime, bank holiday or complicated jobs.
The have recently dropped a load of small contractors who worked hard just to consider profit.
