I am currently eperiencing a similar situation with saga as I am trying to get them to match a genuine much cheaper quote from LV for my husband. They are also not consistent in their response as only a month ago they accepted on verbal information an alternative quote for my own policy, and it was no problem. I was also subjected to hard sell re home insurance while discussing this with a customer service officer, could not get off the phone and burnt the tea. Another customer services officer cut me off just at the point it appeared there was progress and I could not get him back on the phone!

July 2011, I had almost exactly the same. My insurance went up from £293 in 2010 to £396 for this year. I found 'Hasting Direct' could do it cheaper (with slightly better cover) for £270 (cheaper than last year). After 2 weeks of emailing copies of the Hastings on-line quote, Saga said this was not good enough and wanted a full hard copy of the quote!
I don't believe Saga when they say they can Price Guarantee like for like quotes. They only have to go on-line to the Hastings web site to see this. Whilst doing my searches I found 47 companies that could do it cheaper. I am 60 and I also have not made any claims in the last 10 years.
What a waste of time!!, goodbye Saga, hello Hastings.
