Review of Zurich Home Insurance
"Subsidence or collapsed drain- a thirteen year nightmare"

PART 1 - In 1999 I made a claim on my Zurich building insurance for what seemed to be subsidence causing the garage to separate from the main house. Their Loss Assessor* didn't identify the subsidence yet in 2003 this cost us the house sale. Zurich appointed another Loss Assessor* and remedial work started in June 2007. Builders piled through my garage, utility room, and ground outside. The garage, viewed from across the street, looked like it had dropped in the front L/H corner. It had - despite rebuilding, it is still skewed (rebuilding the garage, bricklayers added an extra row of bricks on one wall!).

After piling, the house walls inside and out were extensively cracked. Floors were damaged. Brickwork in one corner of a bedroom has dropped so that the window no longer sits square. I complained that after piling, part of the building seemed to be still moving. (Confirmed by a "site distortion survey"). Zurich appointed a second builder. The two builders have, in my opinion, destroyed my home. I am disabled and have no income other than a small pension. This year my capital will run out and I will have insufficient money to live on.

The Financial Ombudsman Service failed to investigate at least twice and eventually told me to "prove it". At a substantial cost, the "Expert witness" to whom I was extremely fortunate to be referred, took on an in-depth investigation. The result - a report that names Zurich, the Ombudsman and others as being negligent. And the subsidence? Caused by (1) a collapsed drain and (2) by the pilers severing the underground waste water pipe that connected two manholes. Since at least 1999 when I first reported what I thought was subsidence, and worsened by the severed water pipe in 2007, water has been discharging into the ground, damaging not only the join between by garage and house, but also the inside of my house itself. Builders working inside treated my house like a building site, carpets were protected only by a thin sheet of plastic by workmen's heavy-duty boots, professionally laid steps were dug up and amateurishly replaced, professionally laid path and patio areas were torn up and amateurishly replaced - and then the replacement torn up.
