Industry figures show the release of the iPhone 5 has led to a flurry of requests to take out specialist mobile phone insurance.
The details come from Lifestyle Services Group, which administers mobile phone insurance on behalf of phone networks and banking groups that offer cover to the public. It currently oversees around eight million policies.
The group says that in the three days after the new iPhone came out, it registered more than 50,000 new policies. More than half of these were for the new Apple handset, with the 16GB model proving most popular.
iPhone customers are particularly likely to take out cover, not only because the handsets are so expensive to replace, but because they are particularly attractive to thieves. Lifestyle Services Group also says owners are particularly concerned about being without a phone, so look for policies that offer a quick handset replacement.
It does seem that for some customers insurance does indeed prove a good idea: the first insurance claim involving an iPhone 5 came within 24 hours of the handset's release.
