Insurance brokers want banks banned

A senior insurance figure has called for a complete ban on banks selling general insurance products.

Eric Galbraith is chief executive of the British Insurance Broker's Association. He spoke out in response to the Financial Services Authority beginning a consultation into the mis-selling of insurance by salesmen chasing incentive payments. The FSA says initial evidence shows that insurers, investment firms and banks often Full Story

IRA prisoners hit by insurance loophole

Around 25,000 people who were imprisoned in relation to Irish nationalism and terrorism charges have been warned their home and motor policies may be invalid.

The former prisoners include those granted early releases under the Good Friday agreement which freed those people serving sentences related to paramilitary group activities in return for the groups maintaining a ceasefire.

Free phone cover for Tesco buyers

Tesco is offering free mobile phone insurance on all the contract phones it sells. Oddly the offer doesn't cover its own phone network customers.

The deal comes from Tesco Phone Shop, which sells handsets for all major networks, rather than Tesco Mobile itself. Customers on the Tesco Mobile network are excluded from the offer, while the iPhone is also not eligible at the moment.

Mobile insurance limitations prove costly

A Vodafone customer has spoken of his shock at being charged more than £8,000 for fraudulent calls after his phone was stolen, despite having taken out an insurance policy.

Kaveh Lajmir was hit with the huge bill after failing to comply with the terms of his policy and then falling prey to a little-publicised loophole.

The Guardian reported that Lajmir's phone went missing (he wasn't sure if it was lost or stolen) while on holiday in Barcelona. He didn't Full Story

PPI claims firms accused of bogus behaviour

Lloyds Bank has claimed that fraudulent claims for refunds of Payment Protection Insurance are widespread and blamed claims management companies.

As with other major banks, Lloyds is dealing with millions of complaints from customers who say they were either sold PPI that was of little or no use for their circumstances, or that they were tricked into taking the insurance, which is intended to plug Full Story

Insurance fraudster fined, but this time it's the seller

Financial regulators have fined an insurance seller more than £300,000 for stealing customer premiums.

Donald Morgan, who jointly owned Donald Morgan Insurance Services with his wife Janet, admitted holding on to customer premium payments rather than passing them on to brokers. He created false reports and tampered with computer systems to cover up the deception.

Eventually Morgan realised his business would never grow enough that he could repay the money he had Full Story

PPI compensation could be tax bonanza for government

Tax officials have warned that people who receive compensation for mis-sold payment protection insurance will likely be liable for tax on some of the proceeds.

The news comes as several major banks confirmed they are increasing the money earmarked for paying out misselling claims. HSBC is now expecting to pay almost £300 million more than originally estimated.

The tax situation arises because the cash payments customers receive are made up not just of a refund of Full Story

Asbestos victim families win payout battle

Insurers have been told they must pay out on claims made by the families of workers who died as a result of exposure to asbestos. The firms had argued that delays in developing cancer meant they were not liable to pay out.

The case involved people who had died from mesothelioma, a form of cancer that can mean it takes decades before symptoms appear. In virtually all cases, the worker has already died.

Although the workers in questions had been covered by employer insurance Full Story

PPI claims could rocket

An estimated 12 million people will soon be getting letters informing them they may be due compensation for mis-sold payment protection insurance. Banks fear the campaign could double the amount of money they expect to pay out.

Under orders from the Financial Services Authority, the banks must now send clearly-written letters to any customers who may have been mis-sold PPI, even if they haven't yet complained.

The FSA estimates that as many as 90% of those receiving the Full Story
