Review of Zurich Home Insurance
"Subsidence or collapsed drain- a thirteen year nightmare"

PART 2 - Parts of my house were flooded four times (rebuilding the garage, the workmen left a water pipe unsupported and a joint broke, causing water to cascade into a downstairs room; inside the house they removed radiators without calling a plumber or draining the system so that a radiator discharged its contents over two floors; a washing machine connected to a temporary outlet pipe emptied itself into my study after a workmen didn't push the hose properly into the temporary outlet pipe; they jammed a handbasin tap, which a plumber later told me had sheared off; they jammed the indoor mains water stopcock and a plumber did not fully complete the repair so that mains water discharged into my house, flooding a bedroom and bathroom, and water-damaged a hallway, study and another bedroom...).

Thirteen years of hell, all because of the failure to conduct a drains test, indiscriminate piling (piling plans were wrong so the piling they did is different to that on the plans) and builders who were quick to pull my house to bits and whose actions demonstrated that they didn't have a clue how to put it back together again. What advice can I give? Probably don't ever buy buildings insurance from Zurich. But if you have and you are ever unfortunate enough to make a claim for suspected subsidence, make sure the drains are tested before anything else; if piling is recommended, ask if there is an alternative; get your own professional second opinion; photograph everything before any workman ever touches your home; photograph what workman do at every stage of work in progress; question everything (yes, you'll become a nuisance but its your home).

And don't trust the ombudsman - my report says they were biased. Anything good? No, nothing. My bank sold me the policy, shortly afterwards transferred administration to Zurich, and when it came up for renewal a few months ago, took it back from Zurich and then made so many errors that it was transferred back to Zurich - who instead of re-instating the original policy, issued a new policy. My "Expert witness" had advised that the issue of a new policy, twelve years after Zurich rejected my original buildings insurance claim, is bound to have repercussions. I have a report that identifies multiple negligence. Where I go from here I just don't know. I don't have money to sue and legal aid has been abolished. You expect an ombudsman to be fair; this one wasn't and I have two letters admitting they didn't treat me fairly. I can't foresee what will happen to me and my home, but take warning from what I have told you about my Zurich buildings insurance policy.

*For further information - Zurich appointed Cunningham Ellis Buckle (now Cunningham Lindsey) to investigate my 1999 claim, and later (about 2006) appointed GAB Robins.
